How To Convert Your CF Semi Auto
NOTE ON THIS THREAD. WE are not advocating anyone follow any particular course of action in relation to this nor are we advising that this will be a surefire solution to this particular communal problem, or that certain procedures are safe on your firearm. IT IS UP TO YOU to decide a specific course of action on this matter. So all posts here are for entertainment, academic and research purposes ONLY.
This thread is for lads who are affected by the post-2015 center fire semi-auto rifle ban that will come into force on the 1st of November this year.
Post the make and models and any information on how to convert the rifle to straight pull or whatever. We are not advocating anyone to do anything but if lads are carrying out their own work then they should do their own research on this topic.

Kali Key will send to Ireland BUT you must secure both export (from USA) and import (to EU/Ire) documents, not an easy task in the timeframe, but if you leave firearm with RFD and convert when/if key arrives, then this might be doable, but up to this time your FAC was document enough to import from outside the EU, will that still be the case as your FAC wil stand revoked after 1st Nov?

As there is NO regulation in Ireland or the EU on converting a semi-auto to a straight pull bolt action or other. It is open on how you might do this. From getting it lazer welded at 600 euros in one Cork dealer. To simply remove and destroy or block the gas channels, tubes etc. with welds, crimps or whatever. The main point is that you satisfy a gunsmith that this is a permanent obstruction or operation and that they will sign off on it as in their opinion it is permanent. Some will insist on doing the work themselves, others will be satisfied by seeing and test-firing the gun themselves to see that it only functions as a bolt action.
A lot will have to be taken on trust by both AGS and gunowners here on this issue. After all, if AGS is happy that we plug our .22 pistol mags or cylinders to 5 rounds, and "render incapable" our semi-auto and pump-action shotguns to an unrestricted 3-shot capacity. by putting in a metal or wooden dowel..Well, then they will have to accept that whatever conversion you did by your own hand or a gunsmith is good enough too. Them saying it "might be reconverted if you have the parts" is a supposition of you intending to comitt a crime, and they have been slapped down numerous times on this in both district and high courts on firearms issues.
EG we all have a car that is capable of breaking every speed limit in Ireland. Yet AGS and RSA do not insist on us fitting speed governors to keep the top speed of Irish cars at 120kph in case any of us might go over this max speed. If you do well then you face censure under the law for speeding. The same should apply in this situation too. if you said it was converted and you were caught blazing away someplace in semi-auto that you reconverted.Well accept the consequences of your actions.
Also,do not pay more than 100 euros for this conversion. Any GS that can't run a brazing or solder torch or MIG/ TIG welder and immobilises this system within 10 minutes and writes a note to say they have wrecked your semi-auto function or test fires your gun is taking the piss.

Exporting from the US might be more problematic than importing to Ireland. The import cert is another Free document issued by the DOJ just to satisfy the rest of the world not understanding our situation that our license was good enough for an import cert. If you are exporting this as a single component from the USA, it's costly and problematic as it must be exported by a Federal Firearms dealer with a US state dept clearance to do so. Then add another 200$ for the paperwork fee for this export cert. However, this is a once payment, that covers[or did] multiple items in one shipment.IOW you could import 200 Kali keys for that one $200 payment. The quickest way to get these would be for say a German gun dealer to order these for you as Germany has favoured status for trading with firearms with the US, and get them shipped there and then sent over to Ireland with EU paperwork.TonySmith wrote: ↑Thu Aug 10, 2023 8:13 pm Kali Key will send to Ireland BUT you must secure both export (from USA) and import (to EU/Ire) documents, not an easy task in the timeframe, but if you leave the firearm with RFD and convert when/if the key arrives, then this might be doable, but up to this time your FAC was document enough to import from outside the EU, will that still be the case as your FAC will stand revoked after 1st Nov?

What precautions are you taking to ensure that any conversion of your semi-auto firearm complies with local regulations, and have you considered alternative methods such as those mentioned in the discussion?

Re: How To Convert Your CF Semi Auto
he "local regulations" are covered in the Criminal Justice Misc Provisions Act 2024 where it is defined as to what a semi-automatic rifle is under Irish law.As well as the CJMPA pt 1 in 2006 which incorrectly lumps them is as "assault rifles" or" looks like an assault rifle".This has led to many defeats of the Irish Govt in the district courts on appeals, as they cannot define what an "assault rifle" is or looks like, and are fighting against precedent law. Hence, their solution of grandfathering any SA licensed pre the cutout date of 2014
As such there are NO Irish or EU regulations on this matter. As in the EU, it is a moot point that does not come up as most EU countries allow possession of semi-auto rifles, so converting such to a straight pull is academic, and it is left up to each country how to do this. Ireland did not address this problem and ignored any advice to the solutions to this problem and went the easiest way by revoking and banning any further licensing of SA. It does not address the rifles still out there and gives no suggestions on how these must be dealt with once their licenses are revoked. So converting to STPBA is one option.
HOW this is to be done is NOT covered or suggested in any Irish legislation. So it is up to the owner, if they wish to keep their rifle to convert it to be incapable of semi-automatic function.
As stated. We are NOT advocating suggesting or recommending ANY particular method to do such, as there are NO criteria[so far or more than likely ever] issued by the relevant Irish authorities. It is up to each owner to OBEY THE LAW on this point and make sure they have licensed their gun correctly on this point.
We would however suggest that whatever work is done to convert the rifle is either certified by a gunsmith, whether you do it yourself, or they do it for you so that they are satisfied that the rifle is incapable of semi-automatic fire and are willing to put such a statement in writing as proof that they have examined the gun so you have some sort of proof if questioned about it.

Re: How To Convert Your CF Semi Auto
I had my Ruger mini 14 converted for me at Wild Hunter Athlone by their in store gunsmith, Stephen at a very reasonable price and a very fast time frame. I couldn't recommend them highly enough. That being said, I would have preferred that it didn't have to be converted but we don't write the laws. We elect the people who do. So please please please, put a higher value on your votes going forward.
